Difficult things fall to the strong

Captec help to power the virtual reality world of simulation

The evolution of simulation has allowed the practice of dangerous, costly and challenging operations to be performed in a safe and cost effective training environment running on industrial computers. This is put into practice for operators of machinery which requires in-depth training to enable them to be proficient and highly skilled.

Simulations run on industrial PCs provide the perfect learning environment to carry out this training however creating a realistic environment requires computing solutions that are reliable and of a high performance specification capable of providing clear imaging of real-life environments and situations.

Captec were approached by a leading supplier in the UK of innovative technology for the Oil & Gas Industries. Our customer discussed with Captec their need for increased system performance while maintaining a suitable operating temperature. However on further investigation Captec discovered that the simulation company would also benefit from Captec value added services and a COTS+ approach to our solutions. Captec were therefore able to provide a solution which meet the customer's needs and allowed them to address the challenges they were having with previous systems designs.

Captec's solution:

  • Provided complete software configuration to the customer's specifications and saved the customer many man hours in labour of set up time
  • Managed the air flow in the system, with a 3 fan inlet to help reduce the overall temperature in the chassis and provide direct air flow over the components that required cooling the most, which reduced dangerous hot-spots in the system
  • Provided a designed to order chassis to accommodate customer's serviceability requirements
  • Performed a thermal management analysis using our in house heat chamber to ensure no hotspots and determined maximum operating temperature

The benefits to the customer from the Captec solution are:

  • The customer had a COTS+ solution that meets their exact requirements
  • Realised cost savings in terms of man hours for support and set up
  • Improved capabilities of solution

The industrial computer solution provided to the customer was so successful that Captec are now the preferred solution provider. This has also led us to provide other solutions that overcome some of the customers technical challenges.
