Appointment of New Head of Engineering to enhance Technical Capabilities

2009 presented its challenges, however Captec can claim to be one of the few businesses who defied the economic downturn and due to their successful growth have continued to recruit new employees during 2010. Roles are being added across the entire business at all levels to further strengthen and enhance Captec’s technical, operational and business capabilities to deliver the best value and most reliable Industrial Computer for the variety of applications in the market.

Captec's Head of Engineering David Hirst

As other companies continue to trim back their workforces, Captec who are specialists in design and manufacture of industrial computer equipment have realised growth in their UK and North American operations in 2009, and continue to invest robustly in further recruitment in 2010.

To support its growth plans in grooming preparations to its planned IPO, Captec have recruited a new Head of Engineering, David Hirst (OBE). David is the latest addition to the Captec executive team specifically formed by founder and MD, Max Toti, to groom the business to an IPO in 5 years time. His background is engineering throughout his career.  Starting from a degree in Mechanical Engineering, David has worked in Engineering related businesses, particularly defence related, having worked at Airborne Systems for a considerable period of time and rose up the ranks, from Engineer to Technical Director.  In the 2000 New Year's Honours list David was awarded an OBE for his services to the defence industry.

David heads up the Engineering team in Captec, to grow and extend its strategic capabilities both in depth and scale.  Captec’s engineering team is already offering extensive COTS+ capabilities deploying technical engineering expertise to protect COTS computer components against the hostilities of the customer’s required operating environment.  Captec’s industrial computers are already deployed in some of the most challenging environments in Defence, Transport, Security, Oil & Gas, Medical, Automation, Simulation, Energy and Broadcast applications.  For both national and international customers.

David’s core focus will be to further groom Captec’s existing capabilities to extend the operating ranges of an industrial computer to higher levels for:

Thermal Management – To operate in greater extremes of very cold or very hot environments.

Ingress Protection – To operate in dusty/dirty or wet/outdoor environments.

Shock & Vibration – To operate in a wider diversity of mobile and transport applications.

EMC Protection  – To operate in a the most demanding EMC critical environments.

MTBF & MTTR Maximisation  – To offer the highest levels of reliability and most effective and efficient serviceability.

Compliance & Certification – To offer total coverage for all compliance & certification requirements applicable to an Industrial pc technologies.

David will also be extending Captec’s involvement with leading Universities in the UK, Europe and North America to expand its programme of KTP (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships) by partnering with Universities leading in the fields of engineering technologies that are required to support its ambitions for becoming the centre of excellence for computer technologies.  A multitude of technologies are needed in the making of a rugged computer which Captec is developing a partner eco-system to assist with.

Captec is already the leading industrial computer manufacturer in the UK and its ambition is to extend its capabilities to be the leading global design and manufacturing organisation for industrial computers ruggedized to operate in challenging and hostile environments.
