Captec's Commitment to the Environment and a Greener Carbon Footprint

Captec are passionate about the future of the planet and are committed to protecting the environment as best we can. We believe that there is an ever growing and urgent need for responsible environmental management within all organisations. Captec is already seriously committed to this cause with the achievement of its ISO-14001 certification a few years ago, well ahead of the industry. But we take that much further by undertaking many green initiatives which touch every aspect of the business., We plan to communicate these during the course of the year in more news stories to follow this one. However, for this story we will discuss our recycling policy. In 2010 we at Captec have set ourselves the ambitious target of achieving a zero cost for disposal of waste and recycling from the manufacturing of our industrial computers.

Captec's Environmental Commitment

As expected, manufacturing industrial computers produces a vast array of waste streams. Much of this waste can be recycled, such as paper, card, metals, cables, CDs,  batteries, printer cartridges and aerosol cans but some waste can’t be recycled by traditional means. Over the last few years Captec has increased its waste recycled and now recycles approximately 75% of all its waste. During 2010 a challenge was put in place to ensure that all non-recyclable waste does not go to landfill and instead is recycled by other means.

Since 1985 Captec have been specialist designers and manufacturers of industrial computers that need to operate reliably in their applicable environment. In this time Captec have seen waste dramatically increase as our volumes of industrial pc shipments have increased in keeping with our growing customer base. Industrial pc technologies also incorporated over many years many chemicals that were harmful to the environment, which have now been addressed by the RoHS regulations.  This increase in waste has called for an enhanced focus on waste disposal to ensure that our strategy is to constantly reduce waste generated from manufacturing of our industrial computers.

This particular challenge required Captec to look at other ways of recycling waste and has led to new recycling practices such as collecting soft foams and anti-static bubble bags (which are typically used in the packaging for industrial computers) and passing them on to a local charitable organisation for resale. Through initiatives such as this Captec is on track for the end of 2010 to have none of its waste sent to landfill.

At Captec we strive to work with likeminded suppliers and have committed to supply industrial computers that are RoHS and WEEE compliant (Captec are registered with the WEEECare Plc compliance scheme). As Captec continues to strive to be not only a leading in embedded PCs but also as a  responsible business we will continue to take action and implement new practices to reach our target of zero cost for waste disposal.
