Captec expands industrial computer manufacturing facility in IPO grooming

Captec’s growth and expansion continues unabated in keeping with the grooming plans towards a planned IPO. Having doubled our industrial pc manufacturing space only 4 years ago with a move to our current Fareham facility, we ran out of space earlier than expected. A nice problem to have, but still a challenging one. By the addition of a mezzanine extension we managed to increase production space by over 7,000sqf taking the overall Fareham facility to over 25,000sqf.

Captec Facility Expansion

Our operation’s teams are constantly looking for process innovation and lean implementation to reduce cost and production time.  In keeping with these objectives, the additional open plan space created by the mezzanine extension has enabled highly efficient and effective lean manufacturing principles to be applied.  These have led to maximising the throughput of industrial computer integration and reduction of the movement of people and parts, thereby reducing assembly times and costs.   The lean cellular based manufacturing has enabled functional cross production of computers whether panel pc, embedded pc, medical pc, military pc, rack mount computer or any other variant of industrial computer.

Captec Facility Expansion

Captec’s business model has recently extended into the design and integration of complete 19” rack cabinets.  This has required more space, which has been addressed by this expansion.  A racked solution can include a multitude of components, which when sourced separately can be a supply chain management burden.  Captec can now provide a single point of reference for the design, supply and integration of the entire rack.  One relationship, one interface.  A single point of supplier responsibility.

Captec Facility Expansion

The additional space created has further allowed the re-organisation of the Test and Repair facility and the expansion of the Engineering facility.   The space expansion has enabled the accommodation of the headcount expansion in the Engineering team across all disciplines to support Captec’s COTS+ engineering services in designing specialist protection to industrial computers for reliable operation in hostile environments. This has been a holistic expansion across mechanical, electronics, compliance and certification, technical documentation and training.  Additional equipment could also be accommodated, including a dedicated specialist thermal chamber to enable the testing of thermal management methodologies.  This has enabled new designs to be validated overnight and modified as needed based on quantitative results, as well as reduced design turnaround time and corresponding design cost reductions.
