Difficult things fall to the strong

Rugged computer technologies offer building blocks for Extreme Environments

More and more applications are calling for industrial computer based solutions that are capable of operating reliably in some of the most hostile of environments. Specialist industrial computer manufacturer, Captec, has partnered with US based Octagon for many years and is spearheading its ultra rugged computer technologies in these most extreme of environments.

Octagon Ultra Rugged Technologies

At the heart of most “intelligent” systems will lie an embedded pc engine in the guise of a rugged computer.  In most deployments of such systems solutions into extremely hostile environments, this will invariably be the weakest link in the system.

The Octagon CORE systems have been designed from the ground up to provide a general purpose COTS ultra rugged embedded pc ready to be deployed in a system without any further ruggedisation or customisation.  With OS and application software  demanding increasing processing power, resulting in greater thermal dissipation, its increasingly difficult to package industrial computers into smaller footprints.  The CORE pc family elegantly addresses this and is packaged compactly in a brick style enclosure no larger than a shoebox.  Yet under the hood it packs a high end 1.5GHz CPU.

Long terms reliability is at the core of the design philosophy, adopting best of breed components to provide reliable fanless operation over a -40 to +75 Deg C temperature range.  Additional  ruggedisation parameters cover protection against extremes of shock and vibration enabling the CORE to be used in a diversity of in-vehicle transport and mobile applications.  The power supply is custom designed to cater for high levels of interference and level fluctuation commonly found in DC field based applications.
