Difficult things fall to the strong

Moxa NPort Express Module

NPort Express RS232/422/485 Ethernet Server. There are millions of intelligent devices installed in numerous applications with Serial RS232 interfaces providing valuable information but are limited to a serial point to point connection.

Captec have just released the Moxa NPort Express Server which allows any RS232, 422 or 485 device to connect transparently to any PC over an Ethernet TCP/IP LAN or WAN. The NPort server acts as a transparent bridge allowing serial devices to be totally visible over a Network enabling any networked PCs to communicate with remote RS232 devices even though they are not directly physically connected to them.

No bigger than a cigarette packet, the NPort express server is remarkably easy to connect and install. By converting to Ethernet as the transport mechanism, it immediately removes all cabling and distance restrictions commonly associated with RS232 serial device connection as well as allows conventional CAT5 Ethernet technology to be used, which is the standard backbone for most existing networks. Even serial devices on the other side of the world can be connected to, very cheaply via the Internet.

The Nport Express server can automatically configure its IP address from a DHCP server and can be accessed via a standard COM Port Driver or by TCP/IP socket communications. The COM port driver is surprisingly simple and transparently behaves as if the serial device is directly connected to the remote PC. All existing software communicating via a COM port will operate without realising that the device is not locally connected. This facilitates the connection as well as does not impose any software redesign or modification for existing applications.

With so many serial device applications in industrial, laboratory, medical, communications, retail, banking, point of sale, point of information and so many more, this unique product totally liberates serial devices to become network visible to enhance productivity and visibility of information where it is most wanted. This is also particularly beneficial for servicing and support where remote diagnostics and configuration of serial devices can be done without the need to be directly connected to them via an RS232 cable.
